Having participated in a one week Extraordinary APB/WSB Certification Course
from August 20-27 in Havana, Cuba, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxing coach, Sebert Blake has added another accolade to his collection when officials of the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) officially confirmed his success and he is now elevated to a level three star coach.
This is the highest level that any coach can attain under the ruling boxing association and qualifies Blake to a position where he can coach and second boxers at all levels of competitions under the auspices of the International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA).
Shortly after receiving the good news Friday afternoon, Blake was summoned to the office of President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, where the latter individual hosted a press briefing to inform of the new developments. Mr. Ninvalle showered praise on Blake while labeling the feat as another injection in the developmental aspect of the sport. The GBA President said that the feat becomes even more meritorious when it is noted that Blake’s elevation is only the second such in all of the Caribbean (the other being Terrence Poole) and would further strengthen local boxers’ chances at international competitions.
Blake said that he is elated with the new status attained and pledged to use the newly acquired accolade towards the betterment of the sport. He also said that though the course lasted for just one week, it was trying and demanding. He said that the acquisition of resource material was a major challenge but in the end it was worth it.
Blake expressed heartfelt gratitude to his bosses at the Guyana Power and Light for their support. He said that they have been rendering such support since 1989 when he first ventured into his new field and such support has indeed been a major catalyst to his eventual success.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ninvalle said that already the local boxing fraternity has begun to benefit from Blake’s recent sojourn. He said that Blake has been tutored on the use of the Cavelon Cream, authenticated for use by elite boxers, and his expertise has been helpful to his charges and other local pugilists.
Blake had earlier earned a Diploma in Sports when he travelled to Hungary under the auspices of the Guyana Olympic Association and ever since, the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxing coach has been an asset to the boxers under his care.
His participation in the Cuba held course was facilitated by three entities, the Guyana Olympic Association, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Sports Commission.
