As he spoke at the recent opening of the National Toshaos Conference, President Donald laid an impression that the opposition recklessly resists any participation in projects that will reflect major developments in Guyana. The President said that the People’s Progressive Party administration is trying its best to forge a prosperous Guyana, but members of the joint parliamentary opposition are refusing to be “genuine partners” in this venture.
The Head of State, as he addressed a gathering of 350 Amerindian leaders, said that the government recognizes the need to take Guyana to a “higher level.
He said that to do this, there must be new infrastructure and hydro power so as to generate cheap energy and create a vibrant manufacturing sector.
He added that, “We need to revolutionize transport not because the country demands it, but because of what is taking place internationally.”
The President told the indigenous leaders that even as they congregate, work is ongoing to widen the Panama Canal and that means revolution in shipping in the world.
In this regard, the President said that “we therefore need to have deep water harbour, we need to have road paved from Brazil so that Guyana can become a hub in maritime transport in South America and the Caribbean.”
President Ramotar said that if the government is to enhance tourism, there will be an absolute need for a new airport. He said, “we can’t have an airport that when a plane arrives and it rains, the passengers cannot come out of the airplane.”
He emphasized that there must instead be modern facilities in place to attract visitors and for Guyana to become an air hub as well.
The Head of State said that the development that the government is trying to put in place will impact directly on “you” (the indigenous people of Guyana). He told them that even if they reside in areas that might not get electricity from hydropower, having hydro will save the $9B subsidy “we now pay.” The President added that hydro power will allow the government to save in on the money it spends on the importation of fuel and, instead, invest the money in other projects.
“So you see how important it is for the country as a whole, but sometimes unfortunately I feel like I do not have development partners on the other side of the political spectrum,” Ramotar lamented.
“How else can I explain that they (members of the opposition) consciously knocked down the hydro project?” Nevertheless, the President told the gathering, “I will say today, as I said before, I am determined we will have the Amaila project. “We need to have genuine partners on the other side.”
