Yusei Grant, who was unrepresented in court, faced Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to address the charge of robbery under arms on Friday afternoon.
It is alleged that on October 27, 2014, along with others and being armed with a gun, Grant robbed security guard Naresh Raghoorash of one haversack containing $3 million dollars, property of Muneshwars Trading Co.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant said that on the day in question the virtual complainant was about to go to Muneshwar’s wharf when he was confronted by the defendant and two others who were armed with a gun.
A scuffle ensued which resulted in the security guard being shot. It was then that the bag was released. The prosecutor also stated that the defendant admitted to the crime upon his arrest. However, he pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge when it was read to him in court.
The prosecution objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence, amount of money involved, evidence offered, the fact that someone was shot and also because the defendant might interfere with the police’s apprehension of the other suspects.
The defendant was remanded to prison until November 14.
