Noting that the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) is solely responsible for the series of constitutional
crises currently affecting the country, Opposition Leader, David Granger also stated that the government’s policies of prevention as it relates to the reconvening of the National Assembly, the holding of Local Government Elections and the enactment of vital legislation have all lent to the damages being done to the country’s democracy.
The recent scandal involving the Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall he said, has also served to further erode public respect and trust for the PPP/C regime.
The Opposition Leader made this statement during a press conference which was held yesterday at the party’s Hadfield Street Office.
Granger told members of the media that public confidence in the government has drained in several areas including parliamentary democracy, public finance, health security, public services and even in the administration of justice.
As it relates to Parliamentary democracy, Granger said that he believes that the citizenry has reached a point where there is no confidence in the government for since the start of the Tenth Parliament, it has made several brazen attempts to diminish the authority of the National Assembly.
He emphasized that President Donald Ramotar took a backward step when he announced publicly in June 2012, that he had no intention of supporting any Bill that is piloted by the political Opposition. He reminded that since such utterances by the government, the President has failed to assent to Opposition Bills and instead, sought to continuously attack the Opposition through the state media. He highlighted as well, the PPP/C’s actions in resorting to the court of law in a vicious campaign of litigation since March 2012.
With regard to public finance, the Opposition leader reminded that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh had to be referred to the Committee of Privileges twice this year for the mismanagement of funds.
With regard to the public health sector, Granger told the media that the country is still frightened by the recurrent reports of outbreaks of Chikungunya disease and the persistence of other vector-borne diseases. He opined that most Guyanese are uninformed of the dangers that the diseases pose to the population in the hinterland and the coastland regions. He said too that the electorate is still angry over government’s mismanagement of the fatal outbreak of gastro-enteritis in the Barima-Waini (Region One) last year.
As for public security, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) leader expressed concern over the fact that the government is still without an effective counter-narcotics strategy and reminded that the last plan—the National Drug Strategy Master Plan –was never fully implemented and expired five years ago.
The Opposition Leader also stated that the country has become more unsafe, unsanitary and more unstable than ever before, owing to the high rate of crime and the low quality of life. This, compounded with the mounting backlog of cases in the courts Granger said, speaks volumes. He brought into perspective too, the fact that the government continues to delay the operationalization of the Administration of Justice Act which would allow citizens relief against the government.
Granger asserted that the entire nation is suffering from a lack of confidence in the government and the signs of a dangerous and deteriorating social situation are quite evident.
His General Secretary, Joseph Harmon reiterated the coalition’s expression of “no-confidence” in the PPP/C administration.
