The third annual Colts Basketball Club, Phillip George Legacy tournament, begins today at the Burnham Basketball
Court with four games from 4:30pm. The tournament will end the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) season.
Travis Burnett will lead Pacesetters against Rockers from 4:30pm, while Knirva Knights battle Chris Williams’ Victory Valley Royals from Linden at from 6:30pm. Hosts, Shelroy Thomas’ Colts will play Patriots at 8:30pm, while Ravens bring curtains down on proceedings on the first night against Nets.
Ten Division I Clubs and eight Division III Clubs will participate in the competition this year as the Club extends invitation to Victory Valley Royals from Linden and a Berbice team to play for the first time in the competition’s short history.
The winning first division team bounces away with $100,000 while the Runner-Up gets $50,000, and in the third division category, the winner receives $35,000 while the Runner-Up will bounce away with $15,000; the MVP for both divisions get $20,000 each.
George, who was at the time of his death, Head Coach of the Bounty Colts Club, is credited with leading several junior national teams to overseas competitions. In addition, he piloted the careers of notable Guyanese players, Lorenzo Withrite and Andrew Ifill.
George, who was also known as ‘One Foot’, ‘Coach Man’ and most recently ‘Mr. Fundamental’ passed away on December 20, 2012; he was 63 years old. The renowned local Basketball Coach was one of the most consistent visitors of the Burnham Basketball Court.
