Tasked with the responsibility of charting the course for Guyana’s football over the
next 11 months, the FIFA selected Normalisation Committee held its first Press Briefing yesterday, at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Head Office in Section ‘K’, Campbellville.
The Committee which is headed by Chairman Clinton Urling, also comprises Dr. Karen Pilgrim, Tariq Williams, Stuart May and Rabindranauth Chandrapaul replaced the former executive of the GFF and they will be tasked with reforming the constitution, running the day-to-day operations, looking into the Goal Project, strategically planning Guyana’s football as well as it’s sustainability, engaging all stake holders and most importantly, managing the next Congress and electoral process.
The Normalisation Committee was put in place by FIFA after two attempts to hold Electoral Congresses were plagued by walkouts on both occasions by disgruntled factions, forcing FIFA / CONCACAF to intervene and oust the last executive and install the current Committee.
While the road ahead may seem an arduous one for the Committee, especially since none of its members have any prior experience or involvement with football, the Chairman was buoyant about the Committee’s ability to get the job done to the satisfaction of FIFA / CONCACAF and within the specified timeframe.
“It requires a collective effort, we have to embrace a mantra of unity, if we divide and do separate things then football suffers. We are all doing this voluntarily and for me I see it as a national service,” Urling stated assertively.
While cognizant of the difficulties that the previous administration faced, the Chairman said he does not believe that such will be the case with this Committee.
“Call me naïve but I don’t think we will have that… if you hit us then you hit FIFA, if it should happen I think there are rules that FIFA will apply… we are the custodians for FIFA,” he reminded.
Urling pointed out that there are “too many grey areas” with the current GFF constitution and informed that they intend to tread the transparent route, going as far as stating that they will release the GFF’s last audit after it has been reviewed by them.
Meanwhile, as the Committee plans to engage all stakeholders, moreso the affiliated associations to help improve Guyana’s football, the plan will also include improving play on-field as well.
“We don’t know much, but we have to look into it and to find the path to develop the game from the youth level right up and we will be a part of international encounters,” Urling disclosed.
Urling said they intend to start the engagement of stakeholders very early and the first stop could be the Minister of Sport Dr Frank Anthony where the long awaited Goal Project will be discussed.
Absent at yesterday’s briefing was Chandrapaul.
