The nation’s top junior chess players are scheduled to lock horns when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) stages the National Junior Chess Qualifier at the ECI Sports Club, Friendship, EBD, tomorrow afternoon starting at 13:30hrs.
Haifeng Su is the defending champion and will take a keen interest in the proceedings. His archrival, Anthony Drayton, has since graduated to the senior category but Haifeng knows that he will have to be wary of several other players whose recent performances have sent ominous warnings.
The Alli force consisting of Roberto Shariff, Shaheed and Davion are in ripping form and could create a major upset if Haifeng lapses. Then there are Davion Mars and Ron Mootilall, two potent forces that could throw a monkey wrench in the defending champion’s plans.
The top seven players emerging out of this tournament will qualify for the National Junior Chess Championship and a shot at Haifeng Su’s title at a later date.
Meanwhile, organizers have also incorporated a senior and veteran competition to run simultaneously with the junior tournament. The registration fee for both categories is $1,000 for non members and $500 for members.
The tournament is sponsored by Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and additional information pertaining to both categories can be had from Ronuel Greenidge 657-7543 or Irshad Mohamed 664-1650.
