A Stabroek Market labourer who is accused of snatching a businesswoman’s rabbit was yesterday remanded to prison
by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Michael Jairam, who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, is alleged to have stolen Debra Douglas’ $3000 rabbit and $18,000 bicycle at Stabroek Market, Georgetown. The charge stated that the incident occurred sometime between October 17 and 18.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant related that around 23:00 hours on October 17, last, the woman left her rabbit and bicycle in her business place and ventured home.
When Douglas returned the next day, she discovered the items missing and reported the matter to the police. Later, acting on information received, a party of ranks found and arrested Jairam who confessed to the crime. The Prosecutor said that the labourer was charged with simple larceny.
Faced with the allegations, Jairam told the Court that every morning he purchases cabbage for the rabbit. He insisted that the rabbit was given to him by a watchman and added “I don’t know anything about the bicycle.”
As such, a not guilty plea was recorded.
Jairam told the court too that he “does clean up the market and people yard and so.”
The Prosecutor objected to bail and said that Jairam does not have a fixed place of abode and if granted bail he may not return for his trial. Grant told the court that the defendant normally sleeps beneath the police outpost at the Stabroek Market.
The Prosecution’s objection was upheld and Jairam was remanded to prison. The matter was transferred and is set to be called before Magistrate Dylon Bess on November 3.
