Returning to the University of Guyana (UG) Campus for its annual Inter-Faculty
Track and Field Championships, which was held last Saturday at the Turkeyen Campus East Coast Demerara, the nation’s top tertiary institution hosted a successful event.
With students from the Department of Law donning placards to represent their students from the winning Faculty of Social Sciences, the event resuscitated sports on-campus, which has not been a feature of the institution for quite some time.
Over the past years, because of the state of the Ground and the tarmac, albeit an increase in those students with motor vehicles, the University’s Sports Officer, Lavern Fraser-Thomas, was forced to host sport events off campus, outside the university’s contact zone.
However, there was much life breathed into sports on campus last Saturday when eventual male champion, national distance running legend, Cleveland Forde, who accrued 30 points, from wins in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m took the track.
Forde outclassed former standout from the National Schools’ Championships, Health Science’s Carlwyn Collins, as well as Dexter Vanveen, all students of the institute. Natural Science’s Kezia Bess won the Women’s 200m and 400m.
Bess overcame teammates Teshawn Bowman in the 200m and Anarika February in the 400m, as she shared Champion Girl honors with Tain Campus’s, Kenisha Lashley, who won the 1500 and 5000m races from Nikita Wilson.
Natural Science’s, Tamica Garnett, who is also a journalist attached to the Guyana Chronicle had won the Women’s 800m with Wilson finishing second and Lashley third. Garnett had also earlier won the Women’s Long Jump after leaping 4.08m.
University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS) President, Joshua Griffith, another athlete who came through from the National Schools’ Championships, battled in an intense showdown in the 400m against Social Science’s Eon Campbell, and Travis Pool.
Campbell lost the men’s 100m and 200m to teammate Owen Adonis, and finally managed a win in the 400m with Pool second and Griffith third. Despite taking a dive at the finish, Technology’s Kim Chan still handled a win over Bess in the Women’s 100m.
Social Sciences amassed 166 points to top Natural Sciences, which was second with 120 points, edging Health Sciences on 118 points. The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry finished fourth with 98 points while UG Tain Campus in Berbice was fifth with 89 points.
The Faculty of Technology finished sixth with 63 points while The School of Education and Humanities was seventh on 60 points. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences came in the cellar position with 33 points. (Edison Jefford)
