Guyana’s leading marksmen are set and ready to take on each other from Sunday at the Timehri Rifle and
Pistol Ranges when the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) three-day competition fires off (November 2, 8, 9).
All the leading athletes have shown excellent form in the association’s Recorded Shoots which have been taking place over the past weeks at the same venue.
Taking the top spot in the X Class at last Sunday’s shoot was Caribbean champions Lennox Braithwaite ahead of Dylan Fields, Ransford Goodluck and Leo Romalho in that order; competitors shot at 300, 600 and 900 Yards Ranges. Peter Persaud prevailed among three competitors in the O Class.
According to the GNRA, it rained quite a bit which resulted in the flags getting wet making it difficult to detect which way the wind was blowing. Faded light due to the overcast conditions also made it more difficult for the shooters to see the targets at times.
Nonetheless, the marksmen persevered and were able to complete the competition. National Captain Mahendra Persaud was unavoidably absent from last Sunday’s shoot but participated in the others.
An exciting three days of competition to end off another successful year for the local shooters who are also Caribbean Short and Long Range champions is anticipated. The GNRA through its Secretary, Ryan Sampson who is also Secretary of the West Indies Full Bore Shooting Council (WIFBSC) has disclosed that there will be no Caribbean championships in 2015.
Focus will be on sending a strong team to the World Long Range Championships and Palma Match scheduled for Camp Perry in Ohio, USA in August, 2015.
The WIFBSC Executive has already shortlisted a 16-member squad with two reserves that will be in contention for the final selection under Manager Paul Slowe and Captain, John Nelson.
