Lionel Klass appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with attempted murder.
According to the charge, Klass, a resident of Kitty, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Salem Khan with intent to murder him. The incident is alleged to have occurred on October 25, at Railway Street, Kitty Georgetown.
Klass had no legal representation before the court. He was not required to plead to the charge.
According to Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant, on the day in question both the virtual complainant (VC) and the accused were at a shop at Railway Street, Kitty, consuming alcohol, when an argument ensued. Khan picked up a bottle and hit the defendant in his face. The latter in turn picked up some broken glass and dealt the victim several slashes about his body. Both of the men were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for medical examination and treatment; after which Klass was arrested and charged.
The Prosecutor explained that the victim is currently hospitalized and is suffering from severe injuries; he requires a tube to be fed. After hearing the prosecution’s presentation, the Magistrate remanded Klass to prison. The matter has been adjourned until November 14.
