Cuba has sent a second group of medical staff to West Africa to help fight the Ebola outbreak. The country is sending
83 doctors and nurses will treat Ebola patients in Liberia and Guinea. A few weeks ago another contingent of 165 Cuban healthcare professionals travelled to Sierra Leone, according to President of the Guyana Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM), Haleem Khan.
Khan explained that even the World Health Organization (WHO) has noted that Cuba is now the biggest single provider of healthcare workers to the Ebola crisis in West Africa, more than the Red Cross or richer nations. More Cuban medics have been trained to travel there. The epidemic has killed more than 4,500 people in West Africa.
Recently, Cuba hosted a Regional Summit on Ebola where Heads of state and governmental representatives of various countries that make up the regional integration bloc gather in Havana to address a joint contribution to the prevention and fight against Ebola, the deadly epidemic currently affecting West Africa.
Khan explained that the meeting was spurred on the heels of the U.N. Secretary General making an international appeal for additional support and help in preventing and coping with the epidemic.
He said Cuba has been praised for its response to the Ebola crisis, including by the United States.
Despite America’s frosty relations with the Communist island, US Secretary of State John Kerry cited Cuba as an example of a small nation which sent more than larger, richer states.
