– almost three months after attack
Plaisance resident Bernadette Campbell, who was shot in a minibus by a hooded gunman almost three months ago, has succumbed to her injuries.
A relative confirmed yesterday that the 40-year-old Campbell died at the Georgetown Public Hospital last Monday.
She is to be laid to rest today.
The Lot 60 West Road, Plaisance resident, known for wearing lots of gold jewellery, was sitting in the front seat of a Plaisance-bound bus on July 29 when the driver reportedly informed her that a male passenger behind her was acting in a suspicious manner.
Dexter Carr, who was sitting next to the woman, had told Kaieteur News that the shooter followed Campbell from the city.
“She tell me it was some guy in a ‘hoodie’, so I looked around and I see a guy in a white ‘hoodie’ and I asked her if it was him and she said ‘yes’,” Carr related.
It was after the minibus stopped at the back of Plaisance, and Carr and Campbell were the only passengers left, that the gunman attacked.
Kaieteur News was told that the man in the ‘hoodie’ approached the passengers and demanded that they exit the bus. Before they could do so, the bandit opened fire, shooting Campbell in the stomach and slightly injuring Carr.
The gunman reportedly relieved Campbell of her jewellery before fleeing. Campbell was admitted to the GPHC’s High Dependency Unit, but the shooter was never apprehended.
Similar incidents in recent months suggest that bandits have resumed their attacks against minibus passengers.
On September 21, Lashawana Chung, 25, was shot in the thigh and robbed by two young bandits, while travelling in a minibus that was heading to Georgetown.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Agricola, East Bank Demerara.
