A remigrant who was finding life tough in another country decided to pioneer a local chip- making cottage industry in the tiny East Canje Berbice village of Number Two and his product has hit the market with a bang. Launched just two weeks ago, The Maya Plantain Chips Variety is now on the Trans Guyana Airways flights to Kaieteur Falls and other local tourism destinations.
Navin Hansraj, speaking with Kaieteur News, related that he spent over ten years living in the United States but returned because it was very hard since he had to work several jobs and such like. After returning, the idea of getting into the ‘chips’ business flourished in his mind. It seemed not to make sense to him that Guyana was a land bountiful of plantains and was exporting the commodity, while also importing packets of foreign- made plantain chips.
This bothered him a great lot. He then started up his small cottage industry at his Sukhu Street home, where he employs a few persons to peel, cut, and fry the plantains after which they are packed and sealed.
He has introduced three varieties: ‘regular’, ‘ripe’ and ‘hot & spicy’. Over the past days, he has also ventured into the ‘fried’, ‘hot and spicy split peas and channa’, as well as nuts.
“We just started up with that (the channa) to follow up on the plantain chips because the chips has been really, really good,” he added. Very soon, he added, cassava, breadfruit and sweet potato chips will hit the markets, as soon as packages arrive.
When asked what is different from Maya Chips as opposed to the imported plantain chips, Hansraj stated that his price, “is way, way better and it’s fresh and local…all our plantains are from local farmers—they are organic,” he boasted.
“They are also zero trans-fat—fried in vegetable oil—and it’s freshly- packed—it’s not packed and sit down in a warehouse for months waiting to be shipped out.” His customers’ reviews have been positive, he stated, as he has received numerous telephone calls about the chips. This even prompted him to design a Facebook page dedicated to his products, https://www.facebook.com/pages/MAYA/521266098010949
The young businessman thanked his supporters and customers for making his chips the hit they are.
His chips are available in almost all of the big supermarket names across the country.
