More than 150 under-privileged women, over age 40, can walk into the Cancer Institute
of Guyana (CIG) and get their mammogram done for free.
A Mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast. It is used to detect and diagnose breast disease in women.
Every year, dozens of women are diagnosed with breast cancer across the country; some of them eventually die.
According to records from the Guyana Cancer Registry, from 2000 to 2012, a total of 5,445 persons were diagnosed with different stages of breast cancer. It is unclear how many persons survived the battle.
Guyana’s lone cancer institute is currently treating 45 women who are battling breast cancer.
To emphasize breast cancer importance, October is dedicated annually to raising awareness of the disease.
During this month, Non Governmental Organizations as well as other institutions would normally team up to spread awareness throughout the country.
Under the theme, “See the difference, make a difference” the Avon Community Help Fund (ACHF) has partnered with the Cancer Institute to provide free breast screening services to uninsured and low-income women countrywide.
This offer is available until December 30.
Recently, ACHF’s Chairperson, Juditha DaCosta, presented a cheque to CIG’s General Manager, Fiona Legall.
DaCosta said that the money will go towards funding free breast cancer screening for women.
CIG has offered the mammograms at a reduced cost.
Kaieteur News was told that ACHF has been doing breast cancer awareness programmes for the past nine years but after realizing that a number of persons cannot afford a mammogram test, started investing in this area four years ago.
The Cancer Institute’s Manager said that it is very heartrending when a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. She encouraged women of all ages to get tested for this deadly disease.
She revealed that monthly self-breast examination helps women to know about their breasts.
This understanding helps them detect any change that they might need to show or discuss with a doctor.
How it is done…
Examine your breast in a mirror. Keep your hands on hips and straighten your shoulders and look for any visible changes in your breasts, like in size, shape and colour.
Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes. You can also check for any fluids coming out of one or both breasts.
Lie on a bed and touch your breasts using circular motions, make sure to feel the entire breasts.
The Cancer Institute of Guyana is a private entity which came into existence in 2006 via a collaborative effort between the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Health to detect and treat cancer.
