Mosiah Yellow’s (MY) Safraz Esau, who made the second highest runs (184), was
named Man-of-the-Tournament to spur his team to Championship honors after MY beat the Queenstown Jama Masjid (QJM) by eight runs in the final of the Second Annual Latter-day Saints (LDS) Premier League’s T20 Tournament on Diwali Day at the Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) ground on Woolford Avenue.
The competition attracted teams from the City, Linden, Berbice, East Bank, West Demerara and East Coast and was described as a success by LDS steering Committee member Wayne Barrow.
Alvin Persaud top-scored with 31 and got support from Captain Daniel Barker, (17) and Avinash Pitamber (12) as MY reached 128 all out in 19.3 overs. Javid Kayum (4-26) and Majeed Khan (2-20) were the best bowlers for QJM who responded with 120 in 18.4 overs.
Paul Shiwram revived hope with a quick 31 runs which included four sixes and a four but only Azhar Khan who scored 18 from 12 balls of the other batsmen offered for QJM. The medium pacers, Alvin Persaud took (3-18) and Daniel Barker (3-21) were MY’s best bowlers.
Alvin Persaud of MY was adjudged the Man of the final at the Awards Ceremony, while Wazir Hussain of Moroni Orange was awarded the prize for the most runs (187 from five innings) in the tournament. Ajay Seepaul’s 15 wickets at a strike rate of 4.52 secured his award for the most wickets in the tournament while Aaron Sewparaud was adjudged the Most Promising Young Player. Nine year-old Aaron Bacchus was awarded the ‘Youth with Heart’ prize. (Sean Devers)
