– trigger happy man held with illegal gun
An Assistant Superintendent of Police serving in the Lethem area was shot in his foot early yesterday morning when he tried to make peace among a warring group of revelers at a night spot in the area.
Assistant Superintendent Deolall Rooplall sustained injury to his foot when one of the revelers discharged a round from is firearm.
A statement from police headquarters said that investigations are being conducted into an incident that occurred at a night spot at Tabatinga, Lethem, about 03:15 hours yesterday. The incident resulted in the officer being shot and injured to one of the toes of his left foot.
According to the police, the Policeman intervened in an altercation between a group of men when shots were discharged and he was hit. He was treated at the Lethem Hospital and sent away.
A man attached to a private security service in Lethem has been arrested and a .32 pistol was seized as the investigations continue.
Meanwhile, police in the city recovered an unlicensed Intratech Luger 9mm. pistol with four rounds when a trigger happy man discharged rounds into the air early yesterday morning.
The police said that ranks of one of its mobile patrol units responded to a report of gunshots being discharged in Waterloo Street at about 05:15 hours.
When they arrived there persons pointed out a man who was seen with a gun, firing into the air.
The man was arrested and found in possession of the unlicensed pistol.
The police also recovered three empty shells.
The man is in police custody.
