The first ever Berbice Wedding Exposition launch was a simple, but impressive ceremony on Wednesday evening on the lawns of Hand-in Hand Insurance Company, New Street, New Amsterdam.
The launching ceremony is a lead up to the exposition which will be held on December 7, at the University of Guyana, Tain Berbice Campus. The event is organized and coordinated by Berbice businessman, Ryan Alexander.
Among various exhibitors expected to be showcasing their wares are photographers, car rentals, cake makers, event planners, florists, venue providers, beauty salons, makeup artists, wedding decorators, dressmakers and boutiques, hoteliers among others.
Alexander stated that he came up with the idea after people from as far as Suriname began visiting the business place ‘Party Plus’, seeking services, especially in the wedding industry.
“A lot of people come into us and are looking for persons who make cakes, does catering, sewing etc. He said that every year the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports would train a number of persons in various skills which are underutilized. We believe the time has come to showcase these skilled persons. A wedding expo is a good way to have such persons showcases their talents,” he said.
He added that Party Plus which is situated at New Street, New Amsterdam, had been trying to promote other businesses in the service industry. The wedding Expo will give the many cosmologists, caterers, cake decorators, seamstresses and tailors who graduated from various courses and programmes every year, the opportunity to make themselves economically viable.
It will also give persons who attend the Wedding Expo at Tain a chance to benefit from the many discounts that will be on offer.
Alexander said that his team also aims to market Berbice as a prominent wedding and tourism destination.
Region Six Chairman, David Armogan, congratulated Alexander for undertaking the bold initiative. He said that an activity such as the Wedding Expo is good for Berbice and can be used as a new form of tourist attraction.
It will also give opportunities to different sectors in the business environment and has the potential to open up new avenues.
He said that planning a wedding is very demanding and time consuming. These days, people are extremely busy with their work and other daily chores. As such, persons with required skills and expertise can be hired to do all the planning.
People would prefer to have someone else take on all the stress and worries.
Armogan, a successful businessman himself, said that business persons need to be more innovative these days, when thinking of setting up businesses. “Many persons would prefer to venture into traditional business areas. Alexander has chosen to do it differently. The fact that he has chosen to launch into something outside of the box means that he is a businessman with great ideas”.
Also speaking at the activity was Senior Product Development and Marketing Officer of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Annarie Shiwram, and Secretary of the Berbice Chamber and Commerce and Industry BCCDA, Guyandat Marray.
Students of Berbice High School entertained the gathering with a splendid performance of a combination dance depicting the six races in different dance moves.
Some 40 exhibitors have so far confirmed their participation for the exposition.
A number of organizations are already on board with the organizers. They include Citizens Bank, Banks DIH Limited, Fly Jamaica, Pan American Motor Inc., A. Ally and Sons, Hand-in Hand, Homeline Furnishing, Furniture World, GTA, Impressive Signs and graphics, Little Rock Hotel, Guy Gas, Scotia Bank, CIDI, Outar Jewellery, J’s Printery, First Impressions Hotel and party Plus among others.
