When asked if they prefer playing on a slide, sea-saw or swing, the 27 children living at the “Bless the Children’s Home” in Industry, Guyana responded unanimously – the slide. On Saturday, Attorney Gail Seeram, Executive Director and founder of the GAIL Foundation, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the five-seat swing, double slides and two sea-saws built and donated by donors in the United States.
A similar ribbon cutting ceremony was held last week Friday at the Guyana Relief Council Shelter (GRC) in Georgetown, Guyana, where the GAIL Foundation and its donors built and installed a three-seat swing, double slide and playroom furniture, educational toys and books.
Mrs. Yvonne Hinds, Chairperson of the Guyana Relief Council, joined Gail Seeram for the ribbon cutting. “We at the GRC are extremely pleased that GAIL Foundation has recognized the service we provide to the less fortunate in Guyana by enhancing our emergency shelter with playground equipment and a playroom.”
Since its inception in 1994, the GRC has housed numerous families who lost their homes due to flood, fire and high winds.
When asked, “Why build playground equipment?” Attorney Gail Seeram explained that her U.S. non-profit charitable organization, has chosen to build playground equipment for orphanages, schools and community groups in Guyana.
The reasons offered, are that, play gives a child “escape” from whatever personal issue (neglect, abuse, poverty, etc.) that child is going through; gives a child social skills to learn to share and take turns and gives a child exercise.
In addition to these projects, over the past three years, the GAIL Foundation has donated some $3.6M (US$18,000) to the following charitable projects: playground equipment to Promise of Eden Orphanage in Berbice; playground equipment to New Amsterdam Special Needs School; playroom furniture, toys and books to Red Cross Convalescent Home; playroom furniture, toys and books to Promise of Eden Orphanage; furnish a therapy room with computers, books and toys at the New Amsterdam Special Needs School; and Christmas shoebox gifts to the children of the New Amsterdam Special Needs School.
