Guyana suffered mixed fortunes on the opening night of action at the 2014 Inter Guiana
Games (IGG) second leg in Suriname last evening at the Ismay Van Wilgen Indoor Court, Paramaribo, Suriname.
The male volleyball team were too good for their French Guiana counterparts winning in three straight sets, while the females were blown away by the home team in straight sets.
Playing in the feature game of the evening, the Guyanese lasses were just not up to the challenge from their Surinamese counterparts and were dispatched in straight sets 25-6; 25-4; 25-14. The Guyanese showed marked improvement as the game progressed, putting in their best performance in the third and final set urged on by their fellow Guyanese.
The male team were able to brush aside French Guiana even though they did not look their best. French Guiana were the first to register a point but Guyana came back to knot the scores at 3 before taking the lead at 4; but the French side, which looked like they were going to take the fight to Guyana, tied the score at 6 and then 7.
Guyana retook the lead at 8-7 and that was the end of the French for the night. The Guyanese males with just two players returning from last year, by then had warmed up and it was no turning back as the lads from the Land of Many Waters kept piling on the points much to the delight of the Guyanese supporters which included Director of Sport Neil Kumar and the other athletes attending the games.
Guyana went on to win the first set 25-18. In the second set, the Guyanese raced to a 6-1 advantage before wrapping up the second set at 25-13. By then it was just a matter of time as the French looked an ordinary unit, Guyana wrapping up victory by sealing the third set, 25-15.
Coach Levi Nedd in summing up the team’s performance said that they did well given the fact that it is virtually a new team that is accustomed to playing “Backyard Volleyball” in Guyana.
“This is a pretty young team, I think they have done well, they have worked pretty hard and I am happy for this first victory.”
Looking ahead, Nedd pointed out that his charges will have to work on perfecting the sets a bit more, taking care of their distribution.
