With a scintillating speech laced with humor titled “It’s time to upgrade,” Guyanese
Toastmaster Travis Ferreira, secured second place at the just concluded District 81 Humorous Speech Contest. The contest was held during the Caribbean Toastmasters bi-annual Conference activities in St. Lucia, October 16 – 19, 2014.
Toastmaster Ferreira is a member of the Digicel Extraordinaires Toastmasters Club, one of the recently established Corporate Toastmaster Clubs in Guyana.
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit organization devoted to developing the communication and leadership skills of people with a membership of 313,000 in more than 14,650 clubs in 126 countries.
On October 22, 2014, Guyanese Toastmasters joined with Toastmasters around the world in celebrating the 90th anniversary of Toastmasters International, which was founded by Ralph Smedley in Santa Anna California. Georgetown Toastmasters Club is the first Toastmasters Club to be established in Guyana and the oldest Toastmasters Club in the Caribbean.
It was established on March 18, 1959, by Guyanese Derek Adamson upon his return to Guyana after experiencing the Toastmasters programme whilst he was residing in Canada, and was eager to share the benefits with all. At present, there are nine toastmasters Clubs in Guyana: two community clubs which are open to the general public, and anyone interested in developing their communication and leadership skills, six corporate clubs and one Advanced Toastmasters Club.
