– hoping to direct more support to citizens
Government is currently forced to expend billions in order to ensure that the provision of electricity remains affordable
to the nation. This assertion was recently made by Head of State, President Donald Ramotar as he addressed a gathering of mainly parents at the Mabaruma Primary School. The occasion was the Ministry of Education’s Cash Grant distribution there.
The President in his disclosure to the gathering disclosed that “right now Government spends $9 Billion a year to subsidise electricity in our country” a state of affairs he is convinced should not be allowed to persist. Alluding to the billions expended, the President noted that “we could save that money, and not only would we save, but the consumers even though they are paying a subsidised price, the value would come down so that they would have more money in their pockets to spend.”
The President was at the time making reference to the establishment of a hydro power station which could cater, to a large extent, to the country’s electricity needs.
Although all of Guyana will not be able to benefit from a hydro power setup, such as the one proposed for Amaila Falls, the Head of State is however, convinced that the nation will stand to benefit in many enormous ways.
The President who was at the time seeking to amplify the importance of such a project as he addressed the Region One residents, disclosed that “when we build that hydro power station immediately we will not be putting a single cent debt on our people (but) that is what the (parliamentary) opposition is saying.”
“They have now resorted to lies to say that they oppose it because it will bring a debt to the people,” said the President as he informed that Government had made an arrangement with the Blackstone Company to build a hydro power station. In his attempt to validate Government’s arrangement, the Head of State noted that “they (Blackstone) will work it for 25 years and then after 25 (years) they can come to the Government, and the station is expected to last for 75 years so for more than 50 years we would have had electricity at only the operating cost.”
He went on to note that with a hydro power plant in place, the cost of electricity is expected to considerably descend.
President Ramotar continued his deliberations by informing the residents of yet another money-saving feat that Government has been seriously considering – the importation of fuel. According to him, currently Guyana’s biggest importation bill is that of fuel even as he pointed out that if the fuel bill is reduced “a lot of people might not have to smuggle in fuel over the borders.”
“The money that we save…the $9 billion a year alone in subsidy, leaving out what we would save from the importation of fuel, we can save to solve more of your social problems,” the President told an attentive gathering.
According to him, the country should not be hard-pressed to maintain itself since “we have the resources; we might not have enough contractors to do the work that is there to be done, but we have the resources,” said the President as he called on the residents to give Government their support. “We need your assistance, we need your understanding that if we are going to continue to be able to lay the foundation so that you can develop your capacity and (that of) your children,” said the President.
And it is his conviction that “not all of us as parents know that one of the things beating the hearts of every parent, is the fact that they want their children to have a better life than they had. They want their children to be more educated than they are and we are laying the foundation to ensure that you can achieve your dream of not only developing yourself, but seeing your children growing from strength to strength and developing their own capacity…” added the President.
