– shooters to focus on Palma Match
Secretary of the West Indies Full Bore Shooting Council (WIFBSC) Guyanese Ryan Sampson
has informed that the regional body has taken the decision to cancel next year’s championships which was due to be held in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
At this year’s championship which took place in Jamaica, the WIFBSC Executive Committee following its statutory meeting had given the Trinidad Rifle Association (TRA) until the end of August 2014 to confirm their hosting of the event. Antigua & Barbuda was the alternate country.
The TRA responded in late September informing that they would be unable to host the event.
The time left for Antigua to get prepared would not have been adequate and since the body had already decided that the West Indies team would compete at the World Long Range Championships and Palma Match scheduled for Camp Perry in Ohio, USA in August, 2015, attention would be focused on the team to that championship.
Sampson informed that Captain of the Palma Team, Major John Nelson of Jamaica has indicated that plans are moving at encouraging pace.
“The WI Palma Team Captain, Major John Nelson has informed that plans are moving apace and many of the team members have made themselves available for the Palma Match. The WI Council had decided in 2007 in Guyana that in the year the Palma Match is being held, if there is a WI representative team; there will be no WI Regional Championship.
In light of this new development, with the TRA being unable to host, it has prompted the WIFBSC to make a definite decision to send a Team to the Palma Match and to cancel the Regional Championship for 2015.”
Sampson stated that this new position would allow full attendance of regional marksmen and women in the USA. Meanwhile, Guyana will also be looking to send additional shooters to participate in the World Long Range Individual Competition. In January of 2015, intense training at the 800, 900 and 1000 yards ranges will commence, for the Guyanese shooters.
