As a thriving business hub, Bartica situated in Region Seven, has long been recognised as an area rapidly embracing
expansion. And in order to cater to the evident developmental drive being embraced there, the Bartica Interim Management Committee/Neighbourhood Democratic Council (IMC/NDC) has been implementing measures to address some existing shortcomings that exist in the locale.
Moreover, at a meeting convened on Friday last in the boardroom of the IMC/NDC’s boardroom, which saw the attendance of a number of residents of the various housing schemes around Central Bartica, an innovative and well accepted decision was taken.
And it wasn’t merely based on the input of the members of the IMC/NDC, as several residents were able to share their views and exchange opinions so as to further contribute to the development of Bartica.
And the residents, in attendance, according to Public Relations and Press Officer of the IMC/NDC, Sherwyn Downer, were only too keen to emphasis their appreciation for the move taken to solicit their input. This is in light of the fact, he noted, that residents will be able to volunteer to serve their respective communities “an opportunity they claimed to have longed for and had never before been given by the former management of the NDC.”
In fact, some of them were vocal enough to inform that formerly, most of the attention was given to only Central Bartica.
They are therefore excited that “the IMC/NDC is bringing about needful changes…they are pleased that they now have a say and are involved in the community development decisions,” said Downer.
Volunteering for the West Indian Housing Scheme/West of Bartica section are: Downer himself and Shenella Gibson; for Mongrippa Hill Housing Scheme are: Beverly De Amil and Lloyd George; for Four Miles Housing Scheme are: Dawn Hall, Cary Williams and Floyd Jones; for Lower and Upper Potaro Road are: Sharon Layne and Gregory Holder; for Byderabo are: Philbert Sutton, Marcelle Carter and Nikita Jones and for Bamford Point is: Michelle Chandler.
According to Downer, “I myself as a volunteer at the IMC/NDC am heartened and encouraged by other residents who are now coming forward and on board to do the same; it’s a remarkable move because volunteers are usually hard to come by. This is a sign that our open-door policy and transparency practices are working well to the advantage of the IMC/NDC.”
Downer is in fact convinced that his effort at volunteerism has “paved the way for a new kind of involvement with our community development…”
Moreover, he is keen on sustaining moves at encouraging the IMC/NDC’s community development-based objective which fully embraces the notion of volunteerism. “I would like to encourage and promote Community Development Volunteer (CDV) not only in Bartica but throughout the length and breadth of Guyana,” said Downer.
He pointed out too that, “in every community, the IMC has the interest of our community at heart and I want to make it clear that this body (IMC/NDC is not into politics…away with politics and in with more community development objectives is what this IMC/NDC is all about. Residents are seeing and witnessing the transforming of Bartica in many ways because of the IMC community development objectives,” added Downer with pride.
He disclosed that the IMC/NDC is therefore committed and dedicated to ensuring that the continued development of Bartica remains a reality and priority, even as he pointed out that “we will continue to work beyond what is expected and required of us just to ensure that our community is developed.”
“We will continue to afford Bartica and its residents the highest level of representation. Residents are looking to us for representation and leadership for the development of Bartica and this is what we are doing and the residents undoubtedly recognise this,” asserted Downer.
