– cause of death undetermined
Even as they await the results of DNA testing, relatives are now more convinced that the headless corpse that was found at Cummingslodge, East Coast of Demerara a month ago is that of missing businessman Mohamed F Khan.
Their conviction was strengthened during the post mortem examination which was done on the remains yesterday, when they observed what appeared to be a recent wound on the abdomen, evidence of an execution attempt that was perpetrated on Khan in July last.
This is in addition to the positive identification of a belt and a pair of trousers that was found on the remains.
According to a source who witnessed the post mortem examination, although the corpse was badly decomposed, examiners, who included Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh, were able to identify a scar that appeared to be a bullet wound that is consistent with the one received by Khan during the July attempt on his life.
Further, relatives believe that the hair that remains on the skull of the corpse matches that of Khan’s.
However, investigators have secured body samples which they hope to test against those supplied by the missing businessman’s sister using DNA, to confirm the identity of the corpse.
But given the length of time that it takes the police to obtain DNA results, this newspaper understands that Khan’s relatives are making moves to approach the Commissioner of Police for permission to conduct their private testing.
Despite the relatives’ convictions and their desire to bring closure to this part of the matter by burying the remains, the police have not handed over the corpse to them but have returned it to the Lyken Funeral Parlour where it will remain indefinitely.
The post mortem examination, meanwhile, was unable to determine the cause of death, although meticulous examination of the bones and other body tissues was done.
The remains of a man of East Indian descent was discovered on a dam at Cummings Lodge on September 23rd last, a month after Khan disappeared.
The skull, which was wrapped in a plastic bag, was located several feet from the body.
Even though Khan, who had fled to neighbouring Venezuela after selling his popular business on Hadfield Street, had spoken of threats to his life, the police have not yet detained anyone for questioning.
He had escaped execution in July at La Grange on the West Bank of Demerara, when a gunman pumped a bullet in his abdomen shortly after he returned to Guyana on a brief holiday.
Khan, 54, was last heard from on August 21.
A missing person’s report was first made to the Guyana Embassy in Venezuela by Khan’s Venezuelan wife; who last saw him on that date when he left the Spanish-speaking country for Guyana to contact his attorneys who were handling some business arrangements for him.
During an interview with this newspaper following the July execution attempt on his life, Khan had implicated a former business associate who had threatened him over a soured property deal.
Khan had also disclosed that he believed the gunman was either a serving or former member of the Guyana Police Force, giving rise to his suspicions that his business associate is using his well-placed “connections” to escape justice.
Khan, a former television talk show host on the popular CNS Channel 6, had been out of Guyana for the past six years, claiming that he fled the land of his birth because of death threats he had been receiving.
