– Trial gets underway at the High Court
The daughter of murdered Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara, (WCD) resident Budhia, also known as ‘Ronui was called upon to give evidence in a matter in which four persons are on trial for the murder, which took place in October, 2008.
The 68-year-old woman was killed during a robbery at her home in Conservancy Dam at Canal Number Two, WCD. The woman was at the time sharing the home with her daughter and 13 year-old granddaughter.
Police investigations led to the arrest of Nigel Sookram, Steve Sookdeo called “Coolie Boy,” Roy Anthony Sewnarine and Vishal Seecharan called “Markie,” who were charged for the murder.
The four men are on trial before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed twelve-member jury at the High Court. The accused are being represented by Attorneys -at- Law Huckumchand Parag and Raymond Alli.
At the commencement of the matter yesterday, State Prosecutor Judith Gildharie Mursalin told the court that a post mortem examination conducted on the body of the elderly woman, determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to manual strangulation.
As the trial got underway, the victim’s daughter, Basmattie Rampersaud recalled the night of the incident; noting that thieves broke into her house and made off with more than a million dollars in cash and jewellery.
She said that the bandits bound the occupants of the house, all females, including her elderly mother using duct tape. The woman said that the perpetrators not only robbed and terrorized her elderly mother but killed her in the process.
