A symptom of political disintegration, irreversible political disintegration, is when a regime begins to target the media. There is no need to remind older Guyanese of this fact; they have lived through it in the past and they are witnessing its resurrection.
When critics of the government are targeted, it becomes a most dangerous and frightening situation, because this is a reflection of the fear that is gripping the ruling administration and the economic interests that they are seeking to protect.
Make no mistake; there are powerful economic interests that are at work in seeking to muzzle Kaieteur News. They are afraid that their perfidious actions will be exposed and that they be unable to continue to have a free licence to plunder the resources of the country. Behind the attacks on Kaieteur News there is a political conspiracy that goes very high within the ruling administration. But the conspirators are serving higher economic interests.
The Guyanese people must understand that the attacks on Kaieteur News are missiles aimed at the dreams of every Guyanese. They are an attack not just on the right of citizens to receive information, but also an attack on the dreams of each citizen of this country. Guyana is being pawned out to powerful economic forces and when Kaieteur News exposes these things and opens the eyes of the public, this is a threat to these powerful forces who wish to take over Guyana and own it as their property.
At one time in our country’s history, British Guiana was known as Booker’s Guyana. The sugar moguls were so powerful that they had expanded their empire into commerce and industry. They controlled just not the economic production of the country but its trade and commerce.
This is being reinvented in Guyana. The only difference is that it is no longer Booker. It is about another “B” and that B’s cronies who are reaping massive rewards from their access to State funds and patronage. The battle to save Kaieteur News is therefore a battle to save Guyana from being taken over completely by a most powerful economic class.
The enemy is formidable. They have limitless resources and they have skillfully manipulated the ruling elite. They will not be easily repelled in their attempt to make Kaieteur News an example. They believe that it is their duty to make Kaieteur News an example so that no other entity or individual stands up to them and their attempts to dominate Guyana.
There is need for a coalition of the brave, those who are willing to stand up and defend the future of this country. If those behind the conspiracy to muzzle Kaieteur News succeed, they will move on to try to muzzle and snuff out the existence of other forces in our society who oppose their skullduggery.
This is why Kaieteur News cannot and must not stand alone in this struggle against a most formidable enemy. There is need for a national committee to be forced in defence of Kaieteur News. This committee has to be a coalition of religious bodies, the private sector, trade unions, political parties, civil society organizations, the media and most importantly the ordinary citizen.
It was disgusting to read a recent report in a publication describing those ordinary citizens who turned out to show their support for Glenn Lall as fringe elements of our society. The people can never be the fringe elements of our country, and its shows just how some forces in our society view the people that they can describe them is such dismissive terms.
There is need for concerted and coordinated action on all fronts to ensure that those who hatched the conspiracy against Kaieteur News are held accountable for their actions. There is a need to ensure that the political authors of this wicket plot are exposed. There will be actions in defence of democracy which need to be taken in our courts. There will be a need to internationalize this harassment and threat to muzzle Kaieteur News. There is a need also to ensure that all breaches of the public trust are sealed and that greater professionalism ensues. There is a need to report and follow through on complaints to professional associations. There is need for prayer. There is a need to defend democracy. There is a need to defend the defenceless, because you can bet that other persons will be targeted in the future. This is why now more than ever there is need for a national committee to be established to defend democracy and freedom, starting with Kaieteur News.
There is need for a coalition of the brave and fearless to confront lawfully this tyranny that now faces Guyana. Otherwise it will devour all of us. Sooner rather than later!
