New Era Entertainment (NEE) launched their second annual Stag Beer/Cell Smart-sponsored year-end Futsal Tournament yesterday in Linden, committing to continued development for sport in the community.
“We will work with all the referees and teams to ensure that the tournament improves. It is just our second venture and we are committed to improvement,” NEE Director, Bobby Noel said at the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) building.
The tournament will feature all of Linden’s top street football teams from November 1-15, playing for a $200,000 first place purse. The second place team will get $100,000 while third pockets $75,000 and fourth $25,000. Trophies will accompany the monetary prizes that will be doled out.
Stag Beer Brand Manager, John Maikoo told the representatives of teams and media that his brand is about appealing to the grassroots with entrenched community development programmes, in this case through sports.
“I know football is very big in Linden. It is a sport that connects the community and Stag has always been there to connect communities in Guyana, “Maikoo said, adding that the NEE Futsal event is a good initiative.
“We anticipate good support and we see this as a great opportunity to give back to the community. We want to see this tournament grow into something bigger with the commitment of Stag,” Maikoo encouraged the organisers.
Each team will pay $5000 to enter the competition that will be held at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court. A glitzy opening ceremony on the first night, including a March Past was among the protocols mentioned at the launch.
Sales and Operations Manager at Cell Smart, Lenford Malcolm indicated that they have been a part of NEE projects for a number of years and based on their good track record and success, they plan to continue support.
“This event brings people together and we are proud to be a part and give our support,” he said. NEE’s Winston Fraser thanked all sponsors and teams for being a part of the 2014 mega Futsal completion envisaged.
