Yolander Persaud of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, is one of the most recent
attorneys to become part of the Bar Association of Guyana. She was admitted to the bar on Tuesday before Chief Justice Ian Chang, before a courtroom of family members, friends and supporters, including her parents Compton and Kunti Persaud.
Persaud‘s petition was presented by Attorney-at-Law, Edward Luckhoo (S.C), at whose law firm she completed part of her in-service training. The experienced lawyer acknowledged the academic and personal achievements of the young lawyer.
Luckhoo remarked that the 24 year old attended Queens College and School of the Nations before attending the University of Guyana and subsequently Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago. He noted that Persaud did notably well in her studies.
Apart from academia, Persaud, according to Luckhoo, was always an active animal rights advocate and had two of her articles published in the Trinidadian newspapers. She is also a certified chess trainer, a skill which she acquired from her father – a former national chess champion – and has attended many International chess competitions in cities such as Paris, France.
The Chief Justice encouraged the newly appointed lawyer to “show respect and honour to the practice” as she continues her work in the law profession.
In his acceptance of Persaud’s petition, the Chief Justice advised her to “apply wisdom and knowledge in her practice.” He reminded of the importance of preparation, imparting to the young lawyer that she should “thoroughly prepare all her cases, since “failure to prepare is preparing to fail.”
“I promise to keep abreast with the Law and to ensure that I am well read and well prepared for all of my cases”, the young lawyer responded.
She added that she intends to hold firm to her promise of upholding the integrity and nobility of the legal profession. She will be continuing her practice in a corporate law firm in Trinidad and Tobago.
On Monday, another budding attorney was admitted to the bar before Justice Navindra Singh. Sasha Mahadeo, a resident of La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara. She is a former student of Queens College, who excelled in her academic studies.
Her petition was presented by Attorney General Anil Nandlall. The young attorney also vowed to uphold the traditions of the Bar and to be an ornament and example to all members of the profession.
