It is the time of the year when many purporting to have the interest of our country’s footballers come out of pupation or what is termed dormancy or diapause.
They wait in a cocoon all year and then burst into life at year end to deceive our footballers into believing that they have their best interest at heart even after the absence of organised football activities throughout the preceding period leading up to Christmas.
It is nothing strange to hear the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) inundated with applications from all quarters soliciting permission to host tournaments with the Organisers/Promoters primary intent to enrich themselves at the expense of the players and fans.
No consideration is given to the standard of play that will be on show or even the plethora of tournaments that the players have to endure in a short space of time, the only focus is usually how much money will be accrued on New Year’s Day.
Year end activities in football is usually hectic with most associations and private promoters jostling each other for the best dates to host matches, all this with little or no consideration given for recovery time for the players and coaches, ultimately diminishing the quality of play.
While many may feel that our footballers deserve a little extra cash like everyone else at Christmas, the hypocritical actions of those who profess to be genuinely concerned about the state of the sport and its lack of development must be highlighted.
Our footballers, many of who come from depressed communities, are facing a real challenge to make the sport a career choice since those vested with the power to chart a course that could instigate change and create a new image for the sport are too busy trying to enrich themselves.
There is no genuine approach to holistic development because if that was the case then the state of football would have been far better than it is presently and no deliberation is needed to establish whether this outlook is fact or fiction.
It is even being suggested in many quarters that the Georgetown Football Association recommencement of its League is merely a pretext to fool the football public who they expect will be duped into exchanging their hard earned cash to witness substandard football and this is no disrespect to the players it is simply not their fault.
In the absence of well organised programmes all year round, players would not have the sharpness and cohesion required to exhibit quality football. It is as plain as that.
All year round none of them took the pain to keep our ballweavers busy and well oiled so that they could dazzle us with their skills, but now they call on them to showcase their talent for a few weeks, before they (Organisers/Promoters) slide back into their cocoon which will last until next Christmas.
Football fans are at liberty to make a statement once and for all, any position contrary to venting their frustration at the gate will only allow the uncaring officials to persist with their exploitive policies and Guyana’s football will remain apathetic.
It is all about the dollars at year end.
