Local cyclists have continued to enjoy lucrative rewards compliments of corporate
Guyana. This trend is set to continue on Sunday October 26 when the 3rd Digicel/Breast Cancer Awareness Cycle Road Race organized by the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club (LBFCC), takes centre stage.
Determined to ensure that all the clubs in Guyana are given the opportunity to organize this lucrative one-day event which ranks among the highest if not the premier event of its kind on the cycling calendar, Digicel Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope yesterday disclosed that $1.3M at stake.
The occasion was the official launch of the event which took place at Digicel’s Headquarters, located at Lot 8 Fort and Barrack Streets Kingston. Sharing the head table yesterday were Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Ms. Cheryl Thompson, LBFCC President Okel Arthur, Ms. Juditha Da Costa Chairman (Ag.) of the Avon Community Help Fund (ACHF) and Digicel Communications Manager, Ms. Vidya Bijlall-Sanichara who chaired the proceedings.
Hope in sharing his company’s vision for the event which has been growing each year said that it was held in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden last year but this time around, the route will be from Rosignol to the city via Carifesta Avenue where riders will proceed around the outer circuit of the National Park twice before ending outside the Park’s entrance on Carifesta Avenue.
Juveniles (youth), females and veteran riders will ride from the Mahaica Bridge to the city also going around the National Park’s outer circuit twice before concluding. The seniors and juniors will go the full course.
“We have invited all the members of the GCF to this event so we anticipate a large turnout. Last year it was extremely competitive and like I said this year we hope that we have the same level of competitiveness and support from the clubs.”
Race time on October 26 is 09:00hrs. With a number of overseas riders expected to be in the starting line, this event which is strategically held to assist in breast cancer awareness is anticipated to be an exciting dual among the leading exponents of the sport.
Hope in stating that this activity is a signature event informed that the relationship between Digicel and the Avon Community Help Fund dates back many years and it is as a result of their partnership that his company decided to use the sport of cycling to assist in spreading Breast Cancer Awareness.
“We will continue to partner with Avon because we need to help and contribute to bringing further awareness to the effects of cancer in general but specifically breast cancer during the month of October.”
Ms. Da Costa in her remarks, while thanking Digicel for their continued support informed that the theme for the 9th annual Breast Cancer Awareness month of activities is, “See the difference, make a difference.”
The week of activities this year will commence with a Church Service on October 19 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam at 17:00hrs. A wear pink day would also be observed on Friday October 24.
LBFCC President Okel Arthur said that his club was privileged to be given the task of managing the cycle race this year which deals with all the logistics involved in making the event another success.
He said that at least three overseas riders have confirmed that they will compete including Barbadian Darren Matthews and Ruben Campanioni both of Team Coco’s. Arthur also thanked Digicel for their commitment to the sport and promised to bring off a successful race.
GCF President Thompson noted it was a pleasure to be on board with Digicel and (ACHF) for the prestigious race for the third consecutive year.
“I would sincerely hope that cycling can do something in edifying members of the public, members of the media and persons in general about the awareness of breast cancer. This event I promise you would be an exciting and very competitive one.”
Guyana’s riders to the 9th Junior Caribbean Championship held in Suriname and the Elite Caribbean Championships in Puerto Rico will all be competing according to Thompson.
“As for the race we are going to have lots of competitors in the various categories and we will have overseas riders. “
