– driver claims victim ran into car’s path
The Ministry of Education will be standing the cost of the funeral for Jameel Mounter, the teen who was struck
down by one of its officials.
The accident occurred on September 29, on the Stewartville, West Coast Demerara Public Road.
The teenager died in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) last Saturday, more than a week after being declared “brain dead” by doctors at the institution.
A senior police official told Kaieteur News yesterday that traffic ranks returned to the accident scene yesterday and investigators hope that they can send a report to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) by today.
Kaieteur News understands that there are conflicting reports on how the accident occurred.
Jameel Mounter’s relatives allege that the 13-year-old of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara and two female cousins were walking in single file on the southern side of the road when the official’s vehicle struck him. He was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital before being transferred to the GPHC.
However, Kaieteur News understands that the driver alleged that the teen ran into the vehicle’s path when one of the cousins attempted to hit him.
Yesterday, the dead boy’s father, Melwyn Mounter, said that officials from the Ministry of Education met with relatives and offered to cover the cost of the funeral.
Asked if he will be seeking justice for his son’s death or accepting a settlement, the older Mounter said that at this time he cannot make a decision. He explained that once his son is laid to rest, he will be meeting with Officials from the Education Ministry and the person in question for his son’s death, to discuss a way forward.
Asked about the accident, a cousin of the dead lad, who asked not to be named, explained that they were walking in single file in the direction of Uitvlugt, when a car “came from nowhere” and struck Mounter.
She alleged that at the time of the accident, the driver did not come out of the car, and it was left to her and another relative to place the unconscious lad in the vehicle.
The cousin told this newspaper that while at the Leonora Cottage Hospital, the Ministry official, who had struck down Mounter, tried to leave while the doctors were tending to the unconscious teen, but he eventually stayed after she stood in front of his vehicle.
This publication was told that Chief Education Officer, Olato Sam and other officials had met with the teen’s mother while he was in the hospital and offered to assist with travelling expenses, but the family had rejected that offer.
They claimed that they are seeking “justice”.
Kaieteur News was told that while Jameel Mounter was a patient at the GPHC, the driver had met with the teen’s relatives and expressed regret.
The Ministry official was placed on $100,000 station bail.
In light of the teenager’s death, charges could now be laid against the Education Ministry official.
