This year’s Courts / Petra Organisation Schools Pee Wee Football Competition is providing
ample evidence of the abundance of talent that reside within the sport’s community. The young ball weavers from the 24 schools that were selected to participate in this year’s tournament have been displaying startling skills and understanding of the game that truly belies their age, all this while the administration of the sport remains in a sorry state.
The tournament now in its fourth year have grown unbelievably, and whilst previous years the crowd chose to come out in their numbers in the latter stages, this year has seen the opposite with a large presence of fans being witnessed from the start of competition.
This encouraging improvement has thrown a flicker of light on a sport that is suffering so much that sponsors are now treating it like the deadly Ebola virus. Courts Guyana Inc. must be commended for first honouring its corporate responsibility, but more appropriately for its resolve to commit its money to assist in the further development of the sport.
The furniture and appliances giant have now allowed the ongoing wrangling within the fraternity to frustrate its attempt to help with the holistic development of our youths, while the Organising Body, Petra Organisation have also followed the lead of the sponsor.
Courts Marketing Executive Pernell Cummings has been a permanent fixture at the games and his presence could only be construed as a positive sign for the future involvement of the Company.
It simply means that they are serious about obtaining firsthand knowledge about whether they are getting value for money, while at the same time pinpointing future ambassadors for its products.
It might be two-fold, but what is certain is what has been revealed before his eyes is a wealth of talent and there is no doubt if harnessed properly both in terms of on-field and academic achievements, the Company must be given the unmitigated right of first choice.
They’ve withstood the test of turbulent times when nothing much is happening in the sport and placed their sponsorship dollars and whatever gains that emerge in the future must be accredited to them.
On the field of play, fans were able to get glimpses of what this country could offer the CFU, CONCACAF and FIFA, but unless the administrative arm is fixed properly, the fear of the excellent efforts of Courts and Petra Organisation going to waste could become reality.
The future of Guyana’s football reside in this tournament, it cuts across ethnic, racial, social and religious divides so it is simply now a question of football’s administration getting it right in a hurry because if they fail to do so then they risk losing the endless talent to other disciplines or it may simply die a natural death due to the absence of well defined programmes.
Parents, school teachers, coaches and the fans have made their statements; they’ve supported the tournament, now it is up to the powers that be to demonstrate similar care and consideration for the participants.
The players come in all sizes some pint-sized, some a little bigger and some seemed as though they were already in secondary school and while it was amusing to witness a smaller player going up against a bigger one, that discrepancy failed to overshadow the skill level and general understanding of the game that was on display.
Kudos to Courts and Petra Organisation they are helping to provide the stage for a bright future in Guyana’s football. It is now up to the Guyana Football Federation and its affiliates to augment their efforts.
