This was not the first fatal accident to have occurred at John and Jason Tulshi Rice Mill at Number 49 Village, Corentyne. The owner had reportedly refused request to repair the boiler, said people closely associated with the mill.
One person was in custody for questioning as investigations continued into the Sunday morning explosion that killed 50 year old Boiler Operator, Phillip Gangaprashad, of Number 47 Village, Berbice.
The dead man’s right foot which was blown off from below the knee was found on Monday, one day after the blast. The leg was found some 120 feet away in another section of the rice mill.
Meanwhile some interesting information is unfolding. It was revealed that it was not the first time that such an incident had occurred at the rice mill. People who do not want to be identified stated that it was the third time that such an incident had occurred. A close relative of the owner had also perished in a similar blast.
It was also revealed that it was drawn to the owners that one of the tubes was defective and needed to be changed. However, since this was the peak of the rice season the owner concluded that it was unwise to close the mill now, but to capitalize on much available days.
The management had planned to do maintenance in another two weeks. However, the boiler collapsed and blew up. The explosion had caused a fire which was quelled.
The accident allegedly occurred around 07:55 hrs next to the boiler. Gangaprasad was found lying in a pool of blood with severe injuries to various parts of his body. Part of his right leg was missing. He died on the way to the Skeldon hospital.
He leaves to mourn his wife, three children, and other relatives.
