A corrupt cashier who helped herself to over $3M while working at a city court, was jailed for 60 months yesterday.
Tiffany Peters, 24, pinched $3,045,000 from the Maintenance Department at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where she had worked.
In 2012, during the period between February 7 and September 11, she made changes to receipts and records and managed to steal the cash. She had been on the run for over a year until authorities caught up with her.
Peters, of Lot 35 Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, was first arraigned on a larceny by clerk or servant charge last year November 18, before Magistrate Faith McGusty. She had initially pleaded not guilty and the matter was subsequently transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman for trial.
The case was prosecuted by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Prosecutor, Sergeant Vishnu Hunt.
According to the Prosecution, Peters was employed as a cashier in the court’s Maintenance section and her duties entailed writing up maintenance/affiliation cards and cash composition book as well as collecting cash from persons.
During the period, Peters made changes to receipts and records and stole the sum mentioned.
After making off with the money, the defendant was on the run, and following a sting operation Peters was arrested one year after.
During the trial, a number of witnesses including clerks, supervisors and the former Clerk of Court testified.
Magistrate Latchman had last week ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against the accused and Peters had led her defence. In an unsworn testimony, the former clerk maintained that she had not committed the crime.
Returning her verdict yesterday, however, Magistrate Latchman found her guilty and she was sentenced to sixty months’ imprisonment. Her lawyer, Adrian Thompson who had asked for a suspended sentence, stated that he will appeal.
