In recognition of World Teachers’ Day which was observed October 5, last, teachers in Region Ten sponsored a week of activities which started with a Church Service on Sunday and included a men’s symposium, teachers in
concert and karaoke. It ended with a rally and march on Friday. The procession moved from the Linden Technical Institute to the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
According to Chairman of the Upper Demerara Branch of the GTU, Jermaine Figuiera, because teachers are the nation builders they need to celebrate. “The rally is to celebrate teachers who have been working beyond the call of duty, beyond the reality of meagre salaries and we believe as teachers we need to celebrate ourselves because it is an occasion where we have a pivotal role to play in ensuring that the moral fabric of society is maintained and we have an educated work force and skilled personnel to satisfy the need for the development of Guyana.”
Figuiera said this is the third year since the New Executive has been in installed and they have been recognising the teachers. He claimed teachers should be given a better salary and more benefits because nurses are given gratuity every six months and teachers teach them, mould them.
Special thanks to Movements Sounds, Department of Education, Republic and Citizen Banks, CEO of Linmine Secretariat Horace James, Mayfield Clothing and APNU.
