– Guyana to field male and female teams at Continental Cup in Rio
The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) headed by Commander John Flores has unveiled an impressive calendar of activities for the remainder of 2014. The GVF said that it will be hosting some of the biggest and most competitive events serving off from this weekend at the Guyana National Gymnasium, Georgetown.
On tomorrow and Sunday, the federation’s Super League where two teams each from the counties of Berbice and Demerara will be vying for top honors with the title of inaugural GVF Super League Champions at stake. The tournament is expected to bring out the best players in the sport in Guyana showcasing talent like never before.
Following shortly will be the Secondary School tournament which will be on October 18.This tournament is being held to finalize team selection for the Under-16 teams to represent Guyana in Suriname in December.
On October 28, respective male and female beach teams will travel to Rio, Brazil to participate in the South American Confederation, Continental Cup for the first time in our country’s history.
November 8-9 will be the final activity which will bring the curtains down on an eventful year with the hosting of the biggest and most spectacular tournament. This is the Invitational International Club Tournament which will feature top clubs from Suriname, French Guiana, Trinidad, Brazil and Guyana.
According to the GVF, it has been a busy year with several tournaments along with activities held at the community and rural levels all aimed at spreading the game more widely. As a result of this investment, the Essequibo Volleyball Association has become reality.
President Flores has stated that he is very pleased with how the year’s activities have gone so far. He also stated that he is very elated that he has been able to achieve some of the main things he has set out to do when he was appointed President.
Flores also announced that the country has received an outdoor volleyball court as a gift from FIVB, the world governing body, and this court will be placed at the Port Mourant Community Centre Sports Ground, Berbice.
With Help from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the court will be installed shortly providing a modern surface for players in the Ancient County. The local game is well poised for 2015 and beyond where the GVF will be aiming to participate in several international tournaments.
