The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a West Berbice farmer whose body was found floating in a canal at Abary, West Coast Berbice.
Vickram Ramnarine, called ‘Boy’ ,29, of Lot 56 Bennett Dam, Rosginol, West Bank Berbice was found floating in a canal by his workers, who had turned up at his cattle ranch to commence renovation work to some of the structures there.
The workers immediately alerted the man’s relatives and the police who responded promptly. Ramnarine was subsequently fished out of the water, where it was observed that his face was swollen. He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His relatives could not say what caused his death, but they are suspicious since his face was swollen.
The distressed family while urging to police to conduct a thorough investigation are however prepared to await the outcome of a post mortem examination.
The man’s father, Sasenarine Ramnarine, took ill when he learnt of his son’s sudden death and had to be rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital.
Later, he said that Vickram’s sudden demise has puzzled the entire family. He stated that his son was healthy and the last time he spoke with him was around 20:30 hrs on Monday evening and he reported that all was well.
The distraught man stated that his son would usually be alone at the ranch which is located about six miles from home. They cannot say exactly what happened since no one else was expected to be there. It is unclear whether the younger Ramnarine fell into the canal. His son who has been working on the family ranch for approximately four months is not known to be a drinker.
However, he would at times bleed through his nose when the place was very hot. Investigations are continuing.
