Commander of ‘B’ Division, Assistant Supt. Brian Joseph, and the senior team of ranks recently presented cash donations to the two top National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) students, of the depressed community of Angoy’s Avenue.
The team also made donations to two students who will be writing the CXC Examinations in 2015. The presentations took place in the Office of the Commander, in the presence of the parents of the awardees.
The students receiving the donations were Alex Mohabir, top NGSA student of All Saints’ Primary in New Amsterdam; and the two CXC students, Shellon Scipio and Shaniel Sulker. Commander Joseph, addressing the students and their parents, stated that his division has made the venture an annual one, partnering with the Safe Neighbourhood Council (SNC) of Angoy’s Avenue.
Joseph stressed the importance that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) places on young people and that the force is very aware that the numerous crimes being committed by persons these days are committed by persons in the younger age brackets, “so we want to go out there and make a difference.”
He alluded to the numerous youth clubs that were formed by the police in ‘B’ Division over the past years across Berbice. These provide a positive environment in which youths can operate, and develop as individuals in society. The senior rank noted, too, that youths on the Corentyne make full use of the Zara Computer School, located in the compound of the Felix Austin Police College (FAPC), Adventure, Corentyne. Many young people attend the college after school to sharpen their skills in Information Technology.
“We want to continue this relationship with the young people,” he added.
Community Action Officer of the SNC, Pastor Philip Rose, praised Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, who was instrumental in establishing the Citizen’s Protection Programme, the springboard of the SNC and “the best persons to partner is with the police.”
He praised Commander Joseph for keeping the relationship with the youths alive, but noted how dependent the SNC is on young people to promote the good news that the police are not only there to lock people up, rather the police are also doing lots of positive things in various communities countrywide.
“So when you hear people talk negative things, you need to let them know there’s another side to it,” Pastor Rose added. He urged that the stigma of crime and other negative social behaviours be removed from Angoy’s Avenue.
The community must also be associated with good things.
Pastor Rose thanked the parents of the students and urged continued support towards their children’s educational goals.
Commander Joseph then made the cash donations to the students and their parents. He was assisted by Crime Chief of ‘B’ Division, Deputy Superintendent, Terrence Paul; Officer-in-Charge of #1 Sub- Division, Asst. Supt. Guy Nurse and Chairman of the SMC, Mr. Indranauth Persaud.
