– Cricketers to be ‘bought’ today in Barbados
By Sean Devers
West Indies Test batsman Guyanese Ramnaresh Sarwan is among five players with Test experience in the Player Draft of the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Professional Cricket League (PCL) but the charismatic right-hander seems unlikely to be picked by ‘Cricket Guyana Inc” which controls the Guyana Franchise although the Guyana Franchise will have the ‘first pick’ today in Barbados when the PCL Player Draft is held from 11:00hrs
Sarwan, Fidel Edwards and Tino Best head the list of 11 players with international experience in PCL Draft of 102 players which was announced by the WICB.
The 11 International players are: Ramnaresh Sarwan, Fidel Edwards, Tino Best, Ravi Rampaul (pending his agreement), Krishmar Santokie (pending his agreement), Samuel Badree (pending his agreement), Ryan Hinds, Nelon Pascal, Gavin Tonge, Miles Bascombe and Garey Mathurin.
Each of the six franchises will select five players to add to the 10 players which they have already retained. Each squad will comprise of 15 players.
Guyana’s initial 10 are: Leon Johnson, Chris Barnwell, Trevon Griffith, Narsingh Deonarine, Assad Fudadin, Anthony Bramble, Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton and Tagenarine Chanderpaul.
Shiv Chanderpaul has got a WICB central Contract and once available should be an automatic pick for Guyana on the pay-for-play system which could see up to 30 players representing their Regional team in the inaugural 2014/2015 season.
The Guyana Franchise draft nominees are: Anthony Adams, Ricardo Adams, Robin Bacchus, Kevon Boodie, Rajendra Chandrika, Royston Crandon, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Steven Jacobs, Raun Johnson, Keon Joseph, Amir Khan, Zaheer Mohamed, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Vishaul Singh, Paul Wintz and Gudakesh Motie.
After the WICB decided that no player under the age of 18 would be considered for the draft, Guyana replaced Kemo Paul and Shemron Hetmyer with Royston Crandon and Ricardo Adams and were allowed to add Gudakesh Motie to their list of nominees.
The Player Draft will commence with the Guyana Franchise making the opening selection followed by the Leeward Islands Franchise, the Jamaica Franchise, the Windward Islands Volcanoes, Trinidad & Tobago Red Force and finally the Barbados Franchise. This sequence will be repeated for each of the five rounds of draft picks.
A total of 30 players will be drafted. The remaining players will be available for Pay-For-Play contracts at the discretion of the various franchises. Each of the franchises nominated 15 players and the WICB nominated an additional 12 players.
The WICB is awaiting the agreement of Santokie, Rampaul, Badree and Kevon Cooper to be included in the Draft and if they don’t agree they could still be selected for Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago respectively on the pay-for-play system.
The PCL comprises the WICB Regional 4-Day Tournament and the NAGICO Super50 Tournament.
Teams can buy five home born players or five from anywhere in the Caribbean once they are among the 102 in the pool. Additionally, it is understood that three International ‘overseas’ players can be bought by any of the six Franchises, each of which has been given us$27,000 for player’s fees. However, no more than 10 percent of that money can used to acquire the three ‘overseas’ players.
