Dear Editor,
Please permit me space in your newspaper to express my disgust at the lackadaisical and unprofessional work of the police.
Based on my knowledge and experience, the majority of police from Berbice don’t carry out a proper or no investigations at all for matters that are being reported.
There are cases where law abiding citizens who hold reputable positions in society seek the help of police and were disappointed. Officers would entertain reports but don’t ever act upon reports with honesty and investigate matters. Do they really pledge to “serve and to protect?”
I wonder if they fully understand what it means to serve and to protect. There are times when reports are made regarding criminal matters and officers would give excuses for not doing anything.
Either they are lackadaisical or don’t like the job they happen to be a part of. Also, when matters are reported, they would notify you that both parties need to be charged and placed before the court.
In that case, the innocent is being troubled and affected in numerous ways.
Again this is so because of their lackadaisical attitude towards their work and not conducting a proper investigation. Some police would ask irrelevant questions. Are these policemen being trained to interrogate people in an appropriate way?
I doubt it. I have had numerous confrontations with ranks and I have never met one who would act in a professional manner and conduct themselves as protectors of the law. All that I met would speak to you in a harsh and rude manner. At times they would use indecent language publicly, among themselves and even at the people.
How can police officers conduct themselves in such a manner? I therefore, call on those in authority to remind these officers that they should at all times act professionally and conduct thorough investigations so that we will have a better Guyana and feel safe and protected in our country. Officers I implore you to please serve and protect the people in the best of manner.
