Region Ten Executive Officer, Yonette Hilliman, in response to a request from Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon, explained why she appeared to act in contravention of the decision of the Council and evicted Assistant Regional Executive Officer (AREO), Ms. Leola Narine.
Her explanation came on Thursday at the statutory RDC meeting because as she said, the AREO was not eligible for a house in Linden because she is a Lindener.
According to Ms. Narine, she was given approval for temporary accommodation for six months from October 2012 to March 2013. On February 1, 2013, Narine took up an appointment in Kwakwani where she was given accommodation. The REO said that she couldn’t have access to two houses.
The Clerk of Council said in July 2013 a new Regional Education Officer was sent to the Region and the premises had to be made available to her, so notices by way of letters were given to Miss Narine to remove, but to no avail.
Hilliman said that she forcefully removed her belongings in the presence of a police officer, a stock verifier and a cameraman. However, this did not go well with the Chairman and some of the councillors. The Chairman wanted to know why the same force was not used against another officer who is also a Lindener and occupying Government quarters, but has an appointment in another Region.
“(This man) is not an officer in Region Ten; he is in Region Eight enjoying the benefits so it is blind justice.”
APNU Councillor Godfrey Parkinson asked if the REO is in authority to override the decision of the Council, because he feels that if she thought different, then some explanation should have been taken to the Council for a decision. To this, the REO said that she is the sole custodian of all the property of the Region.
“I don’t see that we made a decision and the Clerk of Council override it. Then what are we doing here? Let the REO run the whole show.”
AFC councillor Audain Rutherford was in agreement with his fellow councillor.
He suggested that the same action be taken against one Mr. Handy by the end of this month. A vote for the suggestion was taken and was unanimously won.
Another councillor mentioned that if Ms. Narine is a Lindener and not entitled to living quarters, why then, are the keys given to another AREO who is also a Lindener?
According to a source, the Region has 142 houses and some are occupied by people who are not entitled to accommodation. Some are retired and some are not working with the Region so the question is being asked, why only Ms. Narine?
According to Ms. Narine, she hasn’t been able to collect her belongings as yet so she cannot ascertain if everything is intact.
She claims that when she moved into the house in Kwakwani it was not habitable. She had to purchase a water pump so she could have running water.
