The Guyana Boxing Association has written to world governing body, AIBA, seeking clarification on whether to accept an
invitation from the Suriname Boxing Association (SBA) to participate in a competition in the Dutch speaking nation later this month.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle reported that his association saw if fit to request AIBA’s intervention after receiving conflicting signals from Suriname.
“We received an email from the secretary of SBA Horbert Dompig asking for Guyana’s participation in the competition from October 23 to 27. However, president of the SBA Remie Burke has called stating that his association has not sanctioned the competition. This has left us quite ambivalent at the moment and we are now calling on AIBA to show the way forward,” Ninvalle said.
According to Ninvalle, Dompig claimed in his letter that the association has seven executives. Six of the executives had voted in favour of competition and Guyana being invited. However, this is being challenged by the president, who while admitting that there are two factions in SBA, alleged that two executives including treasurer Sonny Dest, remain loyal to him.
“We would support anything that is aimed at the development of the sport in the region but we are also cognizant of the perils of going against the grain of AIBA’s established principles. Our hope is that Suriname can work out its internal issues quickly to allow for the advancement of the sport,” Ninvalle added.
Guyana is being asked to send a team of boxers, referees and judges to the competition which would be staged at the same time of the Inter Guiana Games. The GBA boss said even though the local National Open is scheduled for around the same time, Guyana stands ready to facilitate the request once AIBA gives the green light.
