Leader of the Opposition, David Granger, has confirmed that President Donald Ramotar is yet to set a date for the two to meet on matters relating to the holding of Local Government Elections across Guyana.
On September 19th, just before leaving the country to attend the United Nations General Assembly, President Ramotar sent a letter to Granger.
In the letter, Ramotar reiterated his government’s “continued commitment to meet with the Opposition on matters of importance to the Guyanese people.”
Ramotar had previously stated that he needed clarification on a letter that Granger had sent him which called on the President to, by August 15, 2014, announce a date for the holding of Local Government Elections, or suffer the consequences.
After the date of the ultimatum elapsed the Opposition leader decided to begin protest actions across Guyana. Apparently those actions are what resulted in Ramotar agreeing to meet with Granger.
Ramotar had promised Granger that upon his return from New York on September 30 he would arrange the meeting, but it seems as if the President is not willing to set a date for that discussion with Granger, moreso a date for Local Government Elections.
The President has since returned but has made no contact with Granger.
At A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)’s weekly press conference held yesterday, Granger said that he is still willing to attend the meeting if it is called soon.
In a previous interview with the publication, Granger said that, while he is willing to meet with the President to discuss this matter which he deems of utmost importance, he is not even for a second going to consider budging from his position with regard to the urgency with which Local Government Elections must be held across Guyana.
Granger told Kaieteur News that his initial letter to the President demanding that he announce a date for Local Government Elections to be held countrywide by September 15 was entirely in accordance with so called policies of the People’s Progressive Party administration, the Local Government Bills passed in the National Assembly and the Constitution.
He said that he will not budge from his position that the holding of Local Government Elections is a matter of urgency. (Abena Rockcliffe)
