The 10-year-old Mahaicony Primary School student who was struck down by a speeding motorcar on the Broom Hall Public Road last Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Andre Monelall of Lot 12 Fairfield, Mahaicony died in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) around 03:30 hrs yesterday.
The lad had sustained multiple injuries about his body, and brain injury.
The accident, which reportedly occurred around 08:15 hrs on October 1, also resulted in Monelall’s eight-year-old brother, Andrew, sustaining injuries.
The younger Monelall was treated at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and sent away.
According to information received, the siblings were walking west along the Broom Hall Public Road when a motorcar, which was heading in the same direction, struck them from behind.
Kaieteur News was told that the 10-year-old was flung in the air before landing on the opposite side of the Public Road, while his younger brother held on to the vehicle.
The children’s father, Mark Monelall, had said that his older son was “in a bad state” at the GPHC.
He said that while his son was a patient at the hospital, he only had the opportunity of speaking with one of the doctors who was treating him.
“The doctor said that he was brain damaged. There was internal bleeding, and there was apparently some fluid leaking from his brain. He also had a fractured neck,” the father of four said.
According to the senior Monelall, it seemed as though his son died minutes after he was struck down.
“He was on a machine with wires all over him…He couldn’t speak, eat, move, or do anything.”
The father recalled that when he heard about the accident, he immediately rushed to the scene.
“The driver was coming from Berbice and my sons were in the corner. Andre was walking on the outside and he was holding his brother’s hand when the driver hit both of them. The car hit, and then pitched Andre over the road, and Andrew was left hooked under the car. I heard that the driver overtake on a double line,” the father claimed.
The driver of the vehicle is in police custody.
A post mortem examination on the remains of Andre Monelall is expected to be done on Monday.
