President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Cheryl Thompson has extended best wishes on behalf of her executive and the cycling fraternity to Guyana’s six-member team that will leave tomorrow to compete at the 9th Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Paramaribo, Suriname, Saturday and Sunday.
Guyana has been excelling at the junior level for quite some time and is referred to as one of the powerhouses at this level in the region along with Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico.
The Guyana team comprises of National junior road race champion Stephano Husbands, last year’s Caribbean silver and bronze medalists Akeem Arthur and Michael Anthony and Alanzo Ambrose. National juvenile champion Andrew Hicks and Raphael Leung completes the team that is expected to do well.
Thompson extended best wishes to the lads for both the Time Trials set for Saturday and the Road Race which would be contested on Sunday.
In the case of Hicks and Leung, Thompson noted that this will be their respective debuts at the international and she is very confident that they would both medal.
“The junior team consisting of four cyclists have had international exposure, two of them at the Junior Caribbean Championships before and got medals (Gold and Silver) Anthony and Arthur, based on their present performances, medals are most certain.”
Husbands and Ambrose had the privilege of attending the South American Youth Games last year in Peru and is of the view that the youths have been turning in consistent performances locally for quite some time.
“We at the GCF are very confident that these young cyclists will do themselves and this nation proud in Suriname. The discipline that they have displayed at every event this year will serve them I good stead against the opposition that they would be facing.” (Franklin Wilson)
