There were no Usain Bolts or Shelly Ann Frasers, but the students of Winfer Gardens
Primary School underlined their talent for the future after turning in some gusty performances that thrilled the crowd when their school staged the Inter House Athletic Championships at the Everest Sports Club ground yesterday afternoon.
The programme commenced in the morning and after 39 competitive events, Roraima House was adjudged the champion unit after amassing 393 points. Pakaraima House scored 390 points and occupied the second place slot, while Ayanghana House ended in the cellar with 343 points.
Up to press time the male and female champion athletes were not identified. The young athletes really give it their all and though the pace in many of the races was grueling, they battled on to the end and only then did they allow themselves to be overcome by fatigue.
One such event was the boy’s Under-12, 400 meters event where Roland Hamilton blazed around the track with Ashlon Henry and Tavon Luke in tow. Hamilton refused to say die and the three finished in exactly that order amidst grunts and gasps.
The 200 meters, girls Under-10 was another hectic affair with Tracy Aaron romping home before Neopha Sampson and Keziah Cassiah respectively. Another commendable event was the 200 meters, girl’s Under-12 where Tanisha Boston assumed the lead from the start and never relinquished until she had crossed the line. Her nearest rival, Jada Shepherd came in a distant second, while Shania Hopkinson brought up the rear.
Jeremiah Harrison turned up the heat in the boy’s Under-10, 100 meters event and braced the tape before Keion Henry and Daquon James respectively. Harrison returned to clinch the honours in the 200 meters before anchoring the boy’s Under-10; 4 X 100 meters relay team to victory.
The there were the obstacle race, tire race, sack race and late for school race among other novelty events. Earlier, activities commenced with prayers before the teams march past and official opening of activities. Parents and teachers capped the day’s events with steamy races that truly reflected the competitiveness of the day’s activity.
