A handyman of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, charged with Break and Enter and Larceny, was ordered held without court bond when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday.
Paul Richard is accused of breaking into Julia Maxwell’s house last Saturday (September 27) and stealing a BlackBerry cellular phone, one Vaseline moisturizer, one computer speaker and a pair of sandals – articles which amounted to $41,500.
After being caught red-handed in her home with the items, Richard was taken to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he initially pleaded guilty to the offence. He explained that he went to “take a smoke” and a man came in the yard and started to beat him. He said when he woke up, he noticed a plastic bag with “dem things” next to him.
Richard denied entering the house, claiming that he fainted as a result of the thrashing he received. As a result, the Magistrate recorded a not guilty plea.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant told the Court that Maxwell secured her home around 14:00 hours and left to conduct business. He said when the victim returned, however, she observed that her door was opened and when she checked, she found the defendant with a plastic bag in his hand which contained the articles.
Grant explained that the matter was reported to the police and Richard was taken into custody and later charged.
The Prosecutor opposed bail on the nature of the offence and stated that the accused has a similar matter pending before the courts.
The Chief Magistrate granted the Prosecution’s request and Richard was remanded to prison. The case will be called again on October 8 for statements.
