One day after the publication of a picture on the front page of the Kaieteur News questioning
the operations of a new sluice at the New Diamond area, the Ministry of Agriculture says the project was delayed because of the slow pace by the contractor.
The Ministry said that the project was taken away from one contractor and retendered, with the sluice now functioning.
The Ministry insisted that the sluice was completed and has been functioning over two months now. “This can be corroborated by residents and the sluice operators which will denounce the lies peddled by your newspaper,” the Ministry said.
However, residents in the area said that new koker is not fully operational because the outfall has to be dredged. They were unable to say when this would be done.
The Ministry said that the Grove/Diamond area was formerly under agriculture production and the government, through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, recognized that with the setting up of the new housing scheme, by the Housing Ministry, that it would require improved drainage discharge to meet the requirements.
In total, the costs were $43M, with $33M spent on construction and $10M on consultancy.
