The Guyana Power and Lights Inc. (GPL) is warning of more blackouts, after a major overhaul of a Wartsila generator was delayed over the weekend.
This would spell more bad news after a week of outages that started two Sundays ago and hit the coastal communities. The authorities resorted to daily scheduled load-shedding.
Yesterday, Berbicians were complaining of outages despite promises made by GPL that the situation would have seen an ease by Sunday.
According to the power company, completion of the major overhaul on the No. 4 Diesel Generator (DG) at the Kingston1 Plant had been delayed. The unit had been expected to up and running by Sunday. Instead this was pushed back to this morning at 01:00hrs.
“In addition, we are forced to replace a damaged turbo charger outlet casing on the No. 4 Wartsila DG at our Garden of Eden Plant, and repairs will not be completed prior to the peak demand period (yesterday).”
In Berbice, the Skeldon co-generation facility will undergo maintenance activities today with two turbines unavailable between 08:00hrs-20:00hrs, severely restricting the capacity available to the grid, GPL said.
“It is envisioned that output will be restored to normalcy by late Tuesday night, thus alleviating the need for further load shedding,” the power company said in its statement.
Today, between 18:00 to 22:00hrs, areas between Victoria and Bygeval, East Coast Demerara and from Canefield to Auchlyne, East Berbice will see power going off.
